The Mgahinga Gorilla Permit guarantees visitors the opportunity to trek and observe the mountain gorillas for one hour. In addition to this, the permit also includes park entry fees for Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for the specific day of the trek, so there is no need to pay extra to enter the park. However, please note that for activities other than gorilla tracking, separate park entrance fees will be required.
The Gorilla permit fee also covers the cost of a ranger or guide who will accompany you in the forest and assist in finding the gorillas. Visitors are welcome to tip the guide or ranger if they so choose. It’s important to note that the Mgahinga Gorilla permit does not include transport, meals and accommodation in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, which must be arranged separately with the help of your tour operator.
Securing a permit to track gorillas in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park requires advanced planning and attention to detail. The park has only one habituated Gorilla family, the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family, which is composed of 8 members, whereas Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has over 18 habituated Gorilla families. Therefore, only 8 permits are available for tracking gorillas each day. To increase the chances of obtaining a permit, it’s important to book in advance.
