Hiking Mount Nyiragongo, an active volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is possible year-round. However, the best time to undertake this adventure is during the dry season, which spans December, January, February, June, July, August, and September. Despite the relatively consistent tropical climate, the dry season offers the most favorable weather conditions for hiking, as the trails are less muddy and the visibility is clearer. In contrast, the wet season brings unpredictable rains that can make trekking more challenging.
Virunga National Park, home to Mount Nyiragongo, is also renowned for its mountain gorilla trekking opportunities. Although the park has extensive suitable habitat, there are only a few habituated gorilla families available for trekking, including Kabirizi, Humba, Rugendo, Mapuwa, Lulengo, Munyaga, Nyakamwe, and Bageni. The Kabirizi group is particularly popular due to its large size, with over 30 gorillas. To secure a permit for trekking this group, it’s advisable to book at least 3 months in advance to ensure availability.
Virunga National Park is one of Africa’s oldest tropical rainforests, featuring dense vegetation and a rich array of flora and fauna. A nature walk through the forest offers a chance to experience the park’s breathtaking landscapes, discover various tree species, and potentially spot some of the park’s mammals and reptiles.
With its diverse habitats ranging from forests and swamps to grasslands, Virunga National Park is a birdwatcher’s paradise. The park is home to over 706 recorded bird species, making birding an essential activity during your visit. Whether you’re an avid birder or a casual observer, the opportunity to see a wide range of bird species is a highlight of a trip to Virunga.
In Kahuzi-Biega National Park, you can embark on a lowland gorilla trekking adventure. The park offers permits for trekking two families of lowland gorillas. Due to the limited number of permits and high demand, especially during peak seasons (June, July, August, September, December, and February), it is recommended to book your permits 3 to 4 months in advance to secure your spot.
