The Mucunguzi Gorilla Family is a recently habituated group of gorillas found in the Rushaga region of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Southwestern Uganda. This group is a recent addition to the list of habituated gorilla families in the southern gorilla trekking sectors of Bwindi National Park and is named after its dominant silverback, Mucunguzi. The word “Mucunguzi” is derived from the local language and means “savoir,” reflecting the strength and wisdom of the silverback. This habituated gorilla family provides visitors with the unique opportunity to observe and learn about the behavior and social dynamics of gorillas in their natural habitat.

The Mucunguzi Gorilla Family is comprised of 8 members, with a predominantly female composition, and is led by the silverback, Mucunguzi. The family split from the Bweza group due to a serious altercation, during which Mucunguzi, who was the third youngest silverback in the Bweza group at the time, was forced to leave and become a solitary male. Eventually, Mucunguzi gained the strength and confidence to establish his own family and has since become the dominant silverback of the Mucunguzi group. This family provides a unique opportunity to observe the behavior and social dynamics of gorillas in their natural habitat and offers insights into the leadership and dominance structures that exist within these magnificent primate communities.

The Mucunguzi Gorilla Family has a unique origin story, having been established by a silverback named Mucunguzi after he successfully invaded the Bikingi group and took some of the females to form his own family. This group has recently welcomed a new baby gorilla born to mother Ndinkahe, bringing the total number of members to 12.
