Rushaga can be easily accessed through Kisoro, which makes it a convenient tracking point for those travelling from Kigali. The habituated families in this region include Busingye, Bweza, Nshongi, Mishaya, and Kahungye, which are all available for tracking and open to tourists. Additionally, it’s the only region in Bwindi that offers Gorilla Habituation Experience with two families, Bushaho and Bikyingi, currently going through the process.
Apart from gorilla trekking, Rushaga also offers a chance to experience the unique culture of the Batwa community through their visitation programs. At Trek Africa Expeditions, we can organize a guided tour of the Batwa community for those interested in cultural encounters.

Gorilla trekking in Rushaga requires proper planning, including what to wear for a comfortable and safe experience. It is important to pack the right gear, such as a long-armed sweater, waterproof hiking boots, and a raincoat. Additionally, you should avoid wearing very bright or black and blue colors, as they may attract Tsetse flies or scare away the gorillas. Instead, neutral colors are recommended. You should also bring a mosquito repellent, sunscreen, binoculars, and gardening gloves to ensure a successful and enjoyable trek. Don’t forget to bring a camera to capture memories of the once-in-a-lifetime experience, but remember to keep the flash off to avoid disturbing the gorillas.
If you’re planning a gorilla trekking adventure in Rushaga, there are two options to get there: by air or by road.
By Air: The fastest and least tiring way to get to Rushaga is by air. Aero Link, a domestic airline, offers both scheduled and chartered flights to Kisoro Airstrip, which is the closest airstrip to Rushaga. While there are no direct flights to Rushaga, you can be dropped off at Kisoro and picked up by a professional guide who will take you to your lodge. The drive from Kisoro to a nearby lodge in Rushaga is about 2 hours. Passengers should check in 90 minutes before their scheduled departure time, and note that the baggage allowance is 15 kilograms per person. Excess baggage is charged at $3 per kilogram. Private charters are also available for those with different timing requirements and routing needs. If you’re traveling with infants below 2 years old, they can travel for free, while children above 12 years old are carried at 70% of the adult fare.
By Road: Rushaga can also be accessed through the main highway road from Entebbe/Kampala, which takes approximately 8-9 hours to drive. The road passes through Kabale town before reaching Rushaga. Additionally, the park can be accessed from Kigali, Rwanda, which takes about 4-5 hours to drive. Regardless of which option you choose, getting to Rushaga is worth it for the unforgettable gorilla trekking experience.
Rushaga in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a year-round destination for gorilla trekking, but it’s important to keep in mind that it’s a tropical rainforest and can receive rain at any time. The ideal time to go gorilla trekking is during the months of June to August and December to February, when the forest experiences the lowest rainfall and is less slippery. However, if you plan to visit during March to May or November, when there is higher rainfall, you can take advantage of discounted accommodations at some lodges.
