Introducing the New Rushaga Gorilla Family – Rwigi

The allure of Gorilla tracking within Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in Uganda grows even more captivating with the expansion of its Gorilla families. The Rushaga Gorilla Families have now reached a count of nine, contributing to a total of 72 Gorilla permits, significantly enhancing the chances of encountering these majestic creatures.

This transformative shift occurred in the Southern sector of Bwindi, precisely the Rushaga Sector. Formerly hosting eight Gorilla families, this sector now boasts nine following the emergence of a new Gorilla family from the Kahunge group. Notably, Kahunge held distinction as the largest Gorilla family within this sector, comprising twenty-four members, including four impressive silverbacks, with Kahunge being the dominant male.

Amidst the Rushaga Gorilla families, a silverback engaged in a dispute with the dominant male, culminating in a confrontation that prompted one of them to depart the group. Rwigi, one of the males involved in the altercation, left Kahunge’s fold with a contingent of believers who aligned with him.

Rwigi – A New Dawn

Emerging from the shadow of Kahunge, Rwigi stands as a nascent Gorilla family within the Rushaga sector. This family is aptly named after its silverback, bearing ten members. Comprising one silverback, five females, two juveniles, and two babies, Rwigi represents a thriving testament to nature’s resilience.
