Mountain Gorilla Safaris Tours have witnessed a surge in interest from African safari travelers in the past decade. Those who have undertaken this extraordinary journey have attested that no other wildlife encounter in Africa rivals the awe-inspiring experience of spending time face-to-face with Africa’s Mountain Gorillas. Gorilla tracking occurs in a handful of remote East African jungle locations, adding a layer of exotic adventure to African Gorilla safaris that is hard to replicate in any other itinerary. The fact that Mountain Gorillas are an endangered species and Gorilla treks are a highly regulated activity make encountering these majestic creatures a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience. Observing a family of Mountain Gorillas at ease in their lush forest habitat is a privilege beyond words, creating a lasting memory you will treasure forever.
Gorillas inhabit the tropical rainforest jungles of East Africa and nowhere else. These magnificent creatures are truly wild and have historically been intolerant of human presence. Thanks to the groundbreaking research of Dian Fossey on Mountain Gorillas in 1966, the concept of Gorilla habituation was introduced.
Gorilla habituation is the intricate and gradual process of acclimating a Gorilla family to the presence of humans in their natural habitat. Each Gorilla family undergoes this delicate process, which spans approximately five years and involves progressively getting them accustomed to the presence of humans. Park rangers initiate this process by spending short periods with the Gorillas every day, maintaining a specific distance that represents the limit of the Gorillas’ comfort zone. Over the years, they gradually extend the time spent and reduce the distance, until they believe the Gorillas are prepared to receive paying clients.
In July 2014, the Uganda Wildlife Authority introduced the Gorilla Habituation Experience, allowing paying participants to join researchers and rangers in the process of habituating a Gorilla family. This unique opportunity grants paying participants at least 4 hours in the presence of Africa’s wild Gorillas, starting from the moment they encounter the fresh trails where the Gorillas nested the previous night. Many who have undertaken this once-in-a-lifetime experience have described it as unparalleled in all African safari activities.
In Uganda, the Gorilla habituation experience takes place in the Rushaga region in the south of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Tourists now have the opportunity to accompany researchers and experience firsthand how Mountain Gorillas are habituated. The price for the Mountain Gorilla habituation experience is USD 1,500 per person per trek, with a maximum of four people allowed in a group per day. Due to the limited availability of Gorilla habituation permits, it is advisable to book well in advance to secure your spot.
