Who Can Go Gorilla Trekking?
The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years, and the upper limit is typically around 85 years, depending on fitness. For travelers who may struggle with the hike, sedan chairs are available. These specially designed chairs are carried by porters, allowing guests to enjoy the trek without the physical strain. Sedan chairs can be reserved in advance or hired on the day of the trek and cost between $400–$500.
Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi: When to Visit
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is an incredible experience that can be enjoyed year-round. However, the best time to trek is during Uganda’s drier months, which run from January to February and from June to early September. During these months, the weather is more favorable, and the forest trails are less muddy, making it easier to travel to the park. Additionally, the reduced vegetation cover during the dry season gives you better visibility, allowing for a clearer view of the gorillas.
What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda
When preparing for a gorilla trekking adventure, it’s important to pack the right gear to ensure comfort and safety. The terrain in Bwindi Forest can be challenging, with muddy paths and uphill sections that can be steep and strenuous. Here’s a list of essentials to bring with you on your trek:
-
Comfortable hiking boots (preferably waterproof)
-
Insect repellent (to protect against bugs)
-
Flashlight/torch and spare batteries
-
Water bottle (stay hydrated during your trek)
-
Camera with extra batteries and lenses
-
Gardening gloves (for protection against thorns)
-
Rain jacket (it can rain unexpectedly)
