April 29, 2025How Difficult is Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest?
Planning a chimpanzee trekking adventure in Uganda and wondering how challenging it really is? Kibale Forest National Park offers the most popular and rewarding chimpanzee tracking experiences in the country. While trekking involves hiking through tropical forest terrain, most visitors find it manageable — and absolutely worth the effort.
Is Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest Hard?
Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest is moderately easy and suitable for most travelers with a basic level of fitness. The terrain in the forest is relatively gentle, with well-established trails at an elevation of around 1,600 meters (5,200 feet). Compared to gorilla trekking—which often involves steeper hikes—chimpanzee treks are less strenuous and usually shorter in duration.
Trek times vary depending on where the chimpanzees are located on the day of your trek, but sightings are very likely, thanks to the park’s high chimpanzee population, estimated at over 1,500 individuals. Kibale Forest is also home to 13 species of primates, including red colobus monkeys, baboons, bush babies, and the potto, making it one of the best places for primate viewing in Uganda.
Wearing sturdy hiking shoes, staying hydrated, and having a reasonable level of fitness will help make the experience more comfortable.
What to Expect During Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest
Trekking through Kibale Forest typically takes you along established trails and gently rolling terrain. The park sits at an elevation of around 1,600 meters (5,200 feet), with altitudes in the region ranging between 1,160 and 2,607 meters. The hike isn’t overly strenuous for most travelers in average physical shape, especially compared to more challenging treks like those in mountainous gorilla habitats.
Each trek begins with a briefing at the visitor center and is led by expert guides and rangers. You’ll spend up to one hour observing a chimpanzee group once they are located — a truly unforgettable wildlife encounter.
Why Kibale Forest is the Top Destination for Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda

It also boasts the highest density and diversity of primates in East Africa, with 13 primate species including red colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, bush babies, and pottos.
In addition to primates, Kibale is a paradise for bird lovers, with more than 335 bird species recorded. Chimpanzee trekking here takes place in two sessions: morning and afternoon. Your session depends on the availability of permits and your travel itinerary.

Best Time to Go Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest National Park
Planning a chimpanzee trek in Uganda and wondering when the best time to visit Kibale Forest National Park is? The ideal time for chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest is during the dry seasons, from June to October and December to March. These months bring more favorable weather conditions—less rain, drier trails, and thinner vegetation—making it easier to hike through the forest and spot chimpanzees in the trees or on the ground. This also means better lighting and visibility for photography.
While chimpanzee trekking is available year-round, the rainy seasons in April, May, and November bring more lush vegetation and muddier trails. On the upside, chimps tend to stay closer since food is abundant, which can result in shorter treks. So if you’re prepared for a bit of rain, trekking during the wet season still offers excellent chances—about 99%—of encountering chimpanzees in their natural habitat.
