April 9, 2025Comparing Budongo Chimpanzee Trekking Permits with Kalinzu
If you’re considering chimpanzee trekking in Uganda, you’re likely wondering how the permit prices and experiences compare between Budongo Central Forest Reserve and Kalinzu Forest. Both parks offer incredible opportunities to see chimpanzees in their natural habitat, but there are a few differences to consider when planning your trek.
Budongo Central Forest Reserve: Chimpanzee Habituation vs. Trekking Permits
At Budongo Forest, you have two options: the chimpanzee habituation experience and chimpanzee trekking.
-
Chimpanzee Habituation Permit: This allows you to spend four hours with chimpanzees as they go about their daily activities. This immersive experience, guided by researchers and forest experts, offers an in-depth look at the chimpanzees’ behavior.
-
Cost: USD 230 for Non-Foreign Residents, USD 160 for Foreign Residents, and USD 90 for Uganda Citizens.
-
-
Chimpanzee Trekking Permit: This option lets you spend one hour with chimpanzees that are already habituated to human presence. You’ll observe their daily interactions, such as feeding and playing.
-
Cost: USD 130 for Non-Foreign Residents, USD 120 for Foreign Residents, and USD 85 for Uganda Citizens.
-
There are two trekking sessions each day:
-
Morning Session: Starts at 8:00 AM
-
Afternoon Session: Starts at 12:00 PM
Kalinzu Forest: Affordable Chimpanzee Trekking
On the other hand, Kalinzu Forest offers chimpanzee trekking at a more affordable price. Here’s what you need to know:
-
Cost: USD 130 for Chimpanzee Trekking Permits in Kalinzu, which is significantly lower than the price in Budongo.
While you can purchase permits at the reception center at Kalinzu Forest, it’s always better to book in advance for peace of mind.
Chimpanzee Trekking Experience at Both Locations
At both Budongo Forest and Kalinzu Forest, your trek begins with a briefing at the park headquarters, followed by a guided walk into the forest. You will be grouped with others and accompanied by trained park guides and rangers.
The trek itself can take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours, depending on the movement of the chimpanzees. Once found, you’ll spend one hour with the chimps, observing them as they go about their activities. You might also spot other wildlife, including primates, reptiles, and mammals. The chances of spotting chimpanzees in both forests are around 95%.
Chimpanzee Families: Budongo vs. Kalinzu
In terms of the number of chimpanzee families available for trekking, Budongo Forest has more groups open to the public. This means there are more permits available each day for visitors, giving you a higher chance of securing a spot, especially during peak season.
Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking: Budongo vs. Kalinzu
Both Budongo Central Forest Reserve and Kalinzu Forest are open year-round for chimpanzee trekking, but the best months to visit are from June to August and December to February. These months typically have the least rainfall, making the trails easier to navigate.
If you plan to visit during the rainy season (March to May or November), the trails may be slippery, but some lodges offer discounts on accommodation during this period.
