Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – Rwanda
Your adventure begins with a warm welcome upon arrival at Kigali International Airport. After meeting your guide, you’ll be transferred to your hotel in Kigali where you can unwind and relax in preparation for the journey ahead.

Day 2: Transfer to Bukavu – DR Congo
After breakfast, you’ll begin your scenic drive southward from Kigali to Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The journey takes you through Cyangugu, where you’ll stop for cultural experiences, including a visit to the National Museum of Rwanda, the King’s Palace in Nyanza, and the Rwanda Genocide Memorial. The stunning views of Lake Kivu and the Nyungwe Forest make this drive a highlight in itself.
In the afternoon, continue your journey to Bukavu, enjoying the lush landscape as you make your way to your hotel.

Day 3: Lowland Gorilla Trekking in Kahuzi Biega National Park – DR Congo
After a breakfast, you’ll embark on an incredible lowland gorilla trekking experience in Kahuzi Biega National Park. These gorillas are significantly larger than their mountain cousins and live in large family groups. The trekking experience is less strenuous than mountain gorilla treks and usually lasts between 1-3 hours.
After your encounter with these incredible primates, enjoy a nature walk around the park to explore the surrounding wildlife. You’ll also visit the Tshibati Waterfalls, the Mbayo tea plantations, and learn about local life by visiting nearby traditional homes.
Your day ends with a delicious dinner back at your lodge.

Day 4: Transfer to Bukima – Virunga National Park, DR Congo
After an early breakfast, your guide will drive you to Bukima, the gateway to Virunga National Park. The drive from Bukavu to Bukima takes about 4 hours and passes through the picturesque town of Goma, where you’ll stop for lunch. After lunch, continue on to Bukima, where you’ll overnight at one of the most stunning accommodations near the park.

Day 5: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Virunga National Park – DR Congo
The highlight of your trip, today is dedicated to mountain gorilla trekking in Virunga National Park, one of the most famous national parks in the world. After an early breakfast, your guide will take you to the park headquarters for a briefing, after which you’ll embark on the trek into the Virunga Mountains.
The trek can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 7 hours, depending on where the gorillas are located. Once you encounter the gorillas, you’ll be able to spend one hour observing these incredible creatures, watching them interact, play, and move through their environment.
Your day concludes with a return to Bukima or Mikeno Lodge for a well-deserved dinner and rest.

Day 6: Drive back to Kigali – End of Tour
After breakfast, you’ll begin your drive back to Kigali, Rwanda. Along the way, take another stop at the Rwanda Genocide Memorial for a poignant and educational visit. You’ll also have time to explore Kigali’s markets, buy souvenirs, and reflect on the incredible journey you’ve just experienced.
Once in Kigali, your guide will drop you off at your hotel or Kigali International Airport for your onward flight.
