Gorilla Trekking Tours from Arusha, Tanzania

Are you planning to start your gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda or Rwanda from Arusha, Tanzania? Whether you’re based in Arusha or looking to combine a classic Tanzania safari with a once-in-a-lifetime gorilla trek, Trek Africa Expeditions is here to help you craft the perfect itinerary.

Arusha, located in northern Tanzania, is a gateway to some of Africa’s most iconic safari destinations, including Serengeti National Park and Mount Kilimanjaro. Thanks to its strategic location, it’s easy to connect from Arusha to Uganda or Rwanda by air or road to experience the unforgettable adventure of gorilla trekking.

Why Combine Tanzania Safari and Gorilla Trekking?

Gorilla trekking is one of Africa’s most sought-after wildlife experiences. Despite the cost, time, and physical effort involved, coming face-to-face with a family of mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is truly magical. Trekking usually involves hiking through dense forests, across rivers, and sometimes over steep terrain. Travelers need to be reasonably fit, but the reward is an hour of unforgettable interaction with these incredible primates.

If you want even more time with gorillas, Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest offers a Gorilla Habituation Experience, where you can spend up to four hours with semi-habituated mountain gorillas—something you won’t find elsewhere.

Where Can You Go Gorilla Trekking in Africa?

From Arusha, your gorilla trekking adventure can take you to three different countries:

Uganda: Trek gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Rwanda: Track mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park.
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC): Visit mountain gorillas in Virunga National Park or see the rare lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park.

Gorilla trekking requires a gorilla permit, and availability can be limited, especially during peak travel months. We recommend booking your trip at least five months in advance to secure your spot.

Planning Your Gorilla Trekking Adventure

Booking early is crucial—especially if you plan to travel during the dry seasons of June to September or December to February, when demand is highest. If you prefer fewer crowds and don’t mind some rain, traveling in the low season (March to May, or November) might offer discounted accommodation options.

Age Limit for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

If you’re planning to go gorilla trekking in Uganda, it’s important to know the age requirements. The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years, while there’s no strict maximum age limit. However, individuals up to around 85 years can trek, depending on their fitness levels.

For elderly travelers or those with limited mobility, gorilla trekking in Uganda—especially in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest—is made easier through the use of sedan chair carriers. If you feel unable to hike through the forest, a team of trained porters can carry you in a specially designed sedan chair during the trek. Hiring a sedan chair can be arranged in advance or on the day of your trek, with prices ranging from $400 to $500.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking tours from Arusha, Tanzania, to Uganda can be done year-round. However, the best time for gorilla trekking is during the dry seasons, typically from January to February and June to early September. These months offer easier hiking conditions, clearer paths, and better opportunities for unobstructed views of the gorillas, as the forest vegetation is less dense compared to the rainy seasons.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Preparing properly can make your gorilla trekking experience much more comfortable. Here’s a list of essential items to pack for your adventure:

Comfortable, hard-wearing walking shoes or hiking boots (essential, especially for muddy trails)
Insect repellent to protect against mosquitoes
Torch/flashlight with spare batteries
Wet wipes for freshening up during and after the trek
Reusable water bottle to stay hydrated

Long-sleeve cotton shirts and lightweight long trousers to guard against undergrowth, nettles, and ants
Gardening gloves (useful for gripping plants while hiking)
Sandals or light walking shoes for use at the lodge
Hat and sunscreen to protect against the sun
Light rain jacket in case of unexpected showers
Sweater or fleece for cool mornings and evenings
