Tucked away in the scenic highlands of southwestern Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of East Africa’s most fascinating wildlife destinations. Bordering both Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, this compact yet diverse park spans 33.7 square kilometers and plays a vital role in protecting one of the world’s most endangered species—the Mountain Gorillas.
Despite its small size, the park offers some of the best opportunities for budget-friendly gorilla tracking tours. As one of only three places on Earth where you can see these gentle giants in the wild, Mgahinga is a hidden gem that promises unforgettable encounters in the misty Virunga ranges.
Why Visit Mgahinga for Gorilla Tracking?
One of the top highlights of gorilla tracking in Mgahinga is its relatively open terrain and lower visitor numbers, making for a more intimate and manageable trekking experience. The tropical montane forests are rich with vegetation, providing plenty of food for gorillas—especially the Nyakagezi family, the only habituated group in the park.
Interestingly, some gorillas migrate freely between DR Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda, adding to the genetic and ecological diversity of the region. Though fewer in number compared to Bwindi, the gorillas here are often easier to find due to the smaller park size and open forest paths.
Permits are limited to only 8 per day, which adds to the exclusivity—so advance booking is highly recommended.
Beyond Gorillas: Rare Wildlife You’ll Encounter
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is much more than a gorilla trekking destination. The park also offers exceptional opportunities to track the rare Golden Monkeys, a colorful primate species that is endemic to the Albertine Rift and found only in the Virunga Volcanoes. Around 42 to 60 individuals in the park have been habituated for tourism, making Golden Monkey tracking a unique and rewarding experience.
Wildlife enthusiasts can also spot other mammals such as bushbucks, forest elephants, forest buffaloes, and elusive species like golden cats, side-striped jackals, and giant forest hogs. Although sightings require patience, the diversity of species in this lush forest ecosystem is remarkable.
Birdwatcher’s Paradise: 184+ Bird Species
For bird lovers, Mgahinga is an under-the-radar treasure. With over 184 recorded species, the park is home to birds such as the Pin-tailed Whydah, Ibis, Stone Chat, and the dazzling Rwenzori Turaco. Thanks to its varied altitudes and habitats—from bamboo forests to open moorlands—Mgahinga offers excellent birding opportunities for both beginners and seasoned enthusiasts.

Best Time to Visit Mgahinga for Wildlife and Trekking
The best months for gorilla trekking and general wildlife viewing in Mgahinga are during the dry seasons—June to August and December to January. During these months, forest trails are easier to navigate, and sightings are more consistent. However, the park remains open year-round, and rainy seasons (March–May and September–November) can offer a quieter and more lush experience, albeit with more challenging hiking conditions.
